S'poreans compete to represent nation at Cheerleading Open

SINGAPORE: Some people were flipping and jumping at Plaza Singapura Saturday afternoon, as part of Cheerobics 2007, the National Cheerleading Competition.
This year's Open Category segment saw 19 groups from tertiary institutions competing for a chance to represent Singapore at the first Cheerleading Open to be held in Japan next month.
It is a sport that demands agility, endurance and strength, combining elements of dance and gymnastics.
The event is a highlight on the cheerleading calendar and it is the first time that Cheerobics is being organised by the Cheerleading Association of Singapore.
The long hours of training and rehearsals finally paid off for NTU Aces who clinched the top prize of $1500 and their ticket to Japan.
All eyes are now on the Primary and Secondary categories which will be competing in June, in conjunction with the Singapore Youth Festival.
Registration for this opens next month. - AFP/yy
